{Fashion FYI} Now Trending: The Oxford Shirt Gets a Sexy Makeover

20140112-011302.jpgThe crisp cotton dress shirt got a sexy makeover for Spring 2014. New York designers like Joan Smalls for Altuzarra opened their shows with striped unbuttoned button-downs. Alexander Wang sexed up the shirt with an afternoon street pajama. And Hermes brought old movie star glamour to our world with looks reminiscent of Grace Kelly of Monaco. Feel like taking a tour thru the best of the trend to see how this look may be able to work for you? I’ve selected some looks below for you to explore your options. {I’m wearing:

A glamorous movie star montage is captured by Hermes in a classic combination perfect for a professional woman or the ladies who lunch.

I adore this shirt dress with wrap skirt that adds a feminine shape to the silhouette. It’s not often that we find new ways to reshape the crisp fuller look of the fabric. And the color is devine.

This resort pairing captures my heart with its spontaneous qualities from the side slit and fringe to the playful stripes and warm colors.

Wes Gordon makes runway couture almost look wearable. Now most of us aren’t able to strut around work in sheer skirts but if this look was monochromatic with a lined skirt it would be easily wearable belted for the office or out for lunches.

Looks with this much fullness are very difficult to wear. I tend to use the separates differently. If the skirt is fuller then a more fitted top works best but I don’t recommend it for curvy figure types. If I’m going to style a fuller top I typically pair it with jeans, tapered slacks or a slim skirt and accentuate the waist with a belt.

This look is sexy, an ultra feminine version of the men’s shirt story. This is one of the most wearable pairings because the look is slimming enough to work under layers like jackets, coats and sweaters. I love flexible styles.

Adorable and playful this look combines the crispness of a fresh oxford with the relaxed lounging feel of a matching boxer. This is such a comfortable outfit for Sundays, endless lounging days or exploring an exotic port during your next cruise vacation. It’s all about having fun experimenting with your style and sometimes even stepping outside of your comfort zone to explore options that you may just fall in love with.

The white shirt really can go anywhere. For those chilly nights when you need just a little but more conservative coverage, this is a fun look to try for a black tie.
